7:35 am
in vice president bide entobroker some sort of a deal. looking at how things are going, do you think we're going to have a deal? >> you know, an agreement could be reached. let me take the step back. this is not the way to run the country. the american people are frustrated by this process. we have a process to get a bill passed and that's to bring it up to the house. it goes to the various committees , house floor, over to the senate. they don't like it, they send it back to us. goes to conference committee and send it to the president. that is how the country is supposed to be run. any agreement now has to be small because there's not enough time for both parties to look at it and decide what's the proper thing to do. me personally i'm not going to look at 1,000 page bill that's $2
7:36 am
trillion and vote on it. it will be a small agreement. >> so what's really the holdup? is it the tax hike or the spending cuts? where is it they are far apart on? >> i think it's both. the tax increases don't really raise all that much money. i've looked at congressional research service. it's a bipartisan organization. if you raise the taxes the so calmed plan b speaker boehner wanted to pass, it would only run the country for 36 hours. and this country uses $10 billion a day. the problem out there is simultaneous cuts that's the sequestration about a hundred billion dollars and taxes all hitting at the same time. that's the concern economists have. and our economy has been stumbling. and we need a much moro bust growth. economists are afraid these cuts and tax increases will put us
7:37 am
back into a recession. >> were you also one that voted or was not for that plan b? >> i was not for that plan b. we didn't identify the spending cuts. let me sort our viewers out. it's hard to understand this. if you look at our budge sxet completely do away with everything digressionary this country does, the department of defense, the department of education, commerce, energy, homeland security, transportation, fbi, national parks, everything digressionary we doshgs we still have a budget deficit. >> what would it take for you to vote? what would it need to be for you to be okay? >> i think most of us and democrats and republicans realize we have to cut the spending here and there are ways to get increased revenue. if you showed me real spending cuts. not something ten years from now or maybe possibly, i
7:38 am
think everyone would look at that. >> what spending cuts? >> two thirds or 60% of the economy that's mandatory spending already in current law medicare, medicaid, social security, interest on the national debt. those are programs that have to be looked at long-term. that's where the real money is in this budget. >> and social security has been brought up in these talks and we've seen how that's gone. not been well. what is the likelihood here of what you're proposing going to be something the other side can agree on as well? >> i think you are going to have to have a bipartisan agreement. look at our healthcare law. most of the tax increases on the affordable care go into affect this year. it was passed on a single party vote and still not accepted by the american people. changes we make in social security and medicare. there are going to have to be changes. let me give you an example.
7:39 am
just one number. last year 2011 we spent $288 billion in medicare than we brought in in premiums. you cannot do that. this country cannot spent spend a trillion dollars more than it brings in in rev view. if you were a family of 4 living on $60,000 a year but spent $100,000 a year, how long can you do that? that's what we're doing. >> we appreciate you coming in from tennessee but here in dc talking with us shedding light on the fiscal cliff issues. let's hope a deal can be reached. >> happy new year. >> you too. thank you. wisdom over to you. >> all right. thank you very much. still ahead, virginia representative joins us live. plus, here's one for you the karsashian plan keeps expanding. how kim and kanye announced
7:40 am
their new edition. it's 7:39 and we'll be right back.
7:41 am
7:42 am

7:43 am
and welcome back. we are still talking about the fiscal cliff this morning. and we are joined now by virginia democrat jeremy connoly who came in on new year's eve. thank you so much. >> good to be here. >> your colleague was just on here congressman roe from tennessee. he was mentioning spending cuts being the big issue. but give me your take on this. your reaction. >> it is more than that. last time we balanced the budget under bill clinton, revenues and spending were inbalanced. we were spending and 20% coming in as revenue. those numbers have changed. we're at 24-25% spending, too high. revenue is down to 14-15%. too low. we have to lower spending and raise revenue. it's not rocket science. and the unwillingness. what my good friend phil roe
7:44 am
didn't say on air was he's taken the pledge. never ever to raise taxes. all but 7 of my republican friends have taken that pledge which is a huge impediment to our getting something done. >> do they have to stick to that pledge? >> i hope they will renounce that pledge. the only pledge worth taking when you get elected to the united states congress is to the constitution of the united states. >> let's back up a little bit. talk about what's happened over the weekend what's going on in the senate and seeing that rita cannot seem to come to any sort of agreement now that the vice president being called in. what does that say when the vice president is being called in to broken some sort of a deal? >> well, obviously, phil roe before me said wouldn't it have been nicer if regular order would have worked? i agree with that but we were
7:45 am
out in recess for 15 weeks not doing this job. so the fact that you got to call in the cavalry at the last minute to rescue a deal if that's what it takes, so be it. but what's important to me is we try to avoid this cliff on behalf of the american people and the clock is ticking. >> and especially we have such an interest in this locally with sequestration and the cuts the spending cuts we're looking at. a big portion coming from the defense budget which affects the defense contractors around here. are we looking at them having to face these cuts? how likely do you think it is? >> absolutely. i think it's a real threat. one we've been warning you about since early summer: it's just a reckless posture to ignore this and now we're facing it, tomorrow. and we know it could save as
7:46 am
much as 7% off our local gdp. our economic performance here. that could cost tens of thousands of jobs both in terms of direct federal employment and federal contractors both in maryland and virginia. and the district of columbia. yeah, we're going to take a big hit if congress side do something to avert the fiscal cliff. >> so what do you think it's going to take to get a deal? what is it going to take to come up with a deal? is it going to take more spending cuts? is it going to take something on the issue of taxes? where do you think they can meet in the middle? some people say they are not that far apart. >> that's what's so frustrating about this. we're really not that far apart. it was baner
7:47 am
who decided to pull the plug who threw everything and we lost another week in unproductive activity. we're not that far apart. there's going to be a package of revenue enhancements and over the fine details but what will be the threshold to allow push tax cuts to be renewed. what will we do about capitol gains and dividends. not that far apart. and what's the package of spending cuts we have to look at to plug the hole when we're looking at other programs that are going to require revenue. i don't think this is all that hard in terms of a small deal. the bigger deal which should have happened is going to have to be addressed in the next congress. as we were talking about, not that far apart on things. there is still time left. what is the time frame of course?
7:48 am
this is going to have to go to the house. what do you think we're looking at time line here? >> i think if there is a deal, clearly in session through new years day. 112th congress bleeding on january 3rd. and that's fine with me as long as we can get a deal done. >> a lot of people hope that can be attained. we appreciate it. good luck. >> thank you sarah. >> time now to talk weather. tucker barnes. >> got cold overnight. the good news is the winds have let up. should be in for a decent looking monday. clouds moving in. temperatures in the mid 40s. temperatures will warmup but a lot of clouds in the forecast. let's get to the numbers. much of the area in the 20s. good hard freeze overnight. 21 in pittsburgh.
